Professor Ashton wil de volgende richtlijnen extra benadrukken. Ze worden genoemd in de handleiding maar niet altijd gevolgd door dokters en patiënten:

Het is belangrijk om uw arts erop te wijzen, dat de afbouwschema‟s in de handleiding alleen bedoeld zijn als algemene richtlijnen. De snelheid waarmee afgebouwd wordt moet flexibel zijn, niet rigide en moet door de patiënt bepaald worden, niet door de arts, afhankelijk van de individuele noden van de patiënt, die verschillen van geval tot geval. De beslissing om af te bouwen moet door de patiënt genomen worden en mag niet opgelegd worden door de arts.
Onthoud dat alcohol zich zoals benzodiazepinen gedraagt en, indien toch gebruikt, dit slechts in zeer beperkte mate mag gebeuren zoals aangeraden in deze handleiding.
